Mathieu Flamini

Mathieu Flamini

Nationality: French

Date of Birth: 07 March 1984 (Age: 25)

Joined Arsenal: 22 July 2004

Left Arsenal: 01 June 2008

After being poached from French club Marseille for a nominal fee (having not signed a professional contract with them) Mathieu Flamini became the centre of controversy. He is also someone who is the subject of much debate. Flamini could be described as the new Grimandi. A footballer, with great teamwork and effort, but maybe minus the skills to make him a key player in any particular position.

Although he has proved to be a good central midfield partnership, most praise has been reserved for his performances as a makeshift left-back. In 2005/06 Arsenal were forced to try out several players in that position and the Frenchman eventually got a chance and didn't look back, proving difficult to beat defensively and supporting the attack.

It remains to be seen in what position Wenger sees the young Frenchman making his name but his versatility should make him a mainstay in the first team squad.

After cementing his place in centre midfield this season, he has been lured by AC Milan's money pit.
