Fans Debate: Should the Transfer window be scrapped?

G4L_Harry (16 January 2010)

One of our regular forumites, Xtreme Gunner, asks the question, should the transfer window be scrapped....................

I was watching a football program on the French Channel Canal+ and this debate came out and i found it very interesting and thought that i should bring it up to you my dear gooner friends.

As guests, there were a football player, 2 football managers, Rennes football club President: (some interesting players there, such as Jimmy Briand and the new and much better Malouda in the name of Christophe Marveaux, this guy is terrific, won't surprise me if he is linked with Arsenal in the near future.) and a sport journalist.

According to the player a, Togolese International, we should stick with the transfer window as its an opportunity for players who are constantly on the bench at there respective clubs to find playing time at other clubs and therefore be able to give a new start and direction to their footballing career, having himself been in that situation and moved twice during January transfer windows,

On the other hand, the Rennes President and one of the managers in the name of GUY ROUX, (surely you must have heard of him),stated that there should only have one transfer window per season, that is the one at the start of each season. Both had different reasons:

Rennes' President suggested that it should be banned because it put every football club in the position that it has to constantly negotiate and renegotiate player's contracts, as there is always a risk that their best players leave their club and, also the fact that players value may fluctuate considerably, therefore it happens that sometimes their best players leave for nothing near their initial value at the start of the season.

For Guy Roux, he used the metaphor of a ship traveling from France to the USA to explain his position. He stated that when the ship is at half of the voyage, there's no way that the captain of the ship can add new sailors to those that are already present or get rid of one or two. He must wait to arrive at destination to take actions. So, in footballing words, he is stating that each team should finish its season with the players that were here at the start and that they should buy or sell only at the start of the season and play until the season end with the team that has been put in place.

Moreover, Guy Roux stated that when you buy a player that is searching for playing time, it often relegate one player already in place to the bench, thus creating a vicious circle in the football world.

On the contrary, the Sport Journalist and the other manager present suggested that there should be a quota on the number of players that can be bought and sold during the January Transfer Window. And for them a club should be able to buy or sell a maximum of 2 players.

Frankly, i don't know what to think about it as it is such a vast debate. On the other hand i like the Sport Journalist option. Quite good and interesting

Tell me Arsenal Fans, what is your opinion on this one???

Thanks for that article XG, what do you all think? Remember we picked up Arshavin during the last window and without him, would we have finished fourth last season?

Looking at the options, I would go for no restriction on selling, but just restrict incoming to 2, or 3 if you have a player out injured for 6months ie RVP...........
